All those drug sales mean that large amounts of cash accumulate in stash houses and collection points around the country. For the multi-billion dollar narcotics business – like any commodities business — it is essential that the suppliers and transporters be paid. That means the money must make its way south, and the traffickers, aided by specialists in money laundering, have devised myriad methods to insure the efficient and safe delivery of their profits. Yet it is by no means clear that the benefits of regulation would outweigh the costs of rising consumption, which would likely follow from wider availability. Another potentially powerful argument in favour of relaxing drug laws is that it would enable dangerous drugs to be more effectively regulated which would, in turn, reduce health harms. It is often argued that prohibition leads to vulnerable drug addicts being unnecessarily criminalised and disproportionately contributes to high levels of incarceration. But would be perceived as an unacceptable risk to health because of increased availability being reflected in a rise in consumption. Our research team was not aware of Silk Road until later in the study, but we felt that it was an important data source that was worth documenting. Geographic analyses, or at least controlling for geographic variation, were deemed to be beyond the scope of the present analysis, but an area of future research. In doing so, this study provides novel insight into the price, revenue and mark up of pharmaceutical drugs distributed on the black market, supply-side predictors of price and mark up, and the practice of gifting. Using a crowdsourcing research website , we solicited data about the price that site visitors paid for diverted prescription opioid analgesics during the first half of 2012.
